On this page we’ll provide with basic information about troubleshooting common problems with your printer or copier. We recommend trying these steps before calling or setting and appointment online. Click on the following troubleshooting points to know more.
Paper jams
Step1.
Turn the printer off and on to see if it can automatically clear some or all of the jam. Many printers provide an error-code listing on the front panel display for the area where the jam occurred. If your printer shows an error code, be sure and check the printer manual to see if that identifies the area of the printer where the jam occurred.
Step2.
Turn off the printer and unplug the printer.
Step3.
Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper.
Step4.
Open any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the toner or ink cartridge.
Step5.
If necessary, remove the toner or ink cartridge. Place it in a bag or away from light to avoid damaging it.
Step6.
If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly. The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam. Never use sharp or pointy tools to try to loosen the paper from inside the printer. These will damage the sensitive parts of the printer mechanism.
Step7.
Replace the toner or ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on.
Step8. If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Visually inspect the paper path. If you can’t see any piece of paper that means the printer has to be disassembled in order to remove the remaining paper debris. If your business is located in the Houston metro area we can help!
Recurring paper jams
When paper jams happen frequently (a few times a day, daily) the parts that deal with paper transportation inside your printer or copier need to be serviced and/or replaced.
Error codes
Many printers and copiers have a front panel display where error codes or error messages are showing up when problems occur. These codes or messages are intended to point to the problem experienced by the machine. This information is useful for our technicians in troubleshooting the problem and this is the reason why we recommend providing us with these codes when placing a service call. Not in all instances the error codes are accurate whereas the codes are meant to be part of the troubleshooting process and not a final diagnosis.
Many error codes can be cleared by simply turning your printer or copier off and back on. If the error message is still there then you need technical assistance.
No power or nothing on the display
These are actually two different issues. If there is no power to the printer or copier when you turn it on from the main switch, try to unplug the machine and plug it back into a different power outlet. It is recommended to plug the cord directly into the wall in order to eliminate possible problems with the surge protector (power strip). Still no power? It’s time to call us or to schedule an appointment online.
If there is power to your printer or copier but nothing shows up on the front panel display, the machine may have an internal electronics problem and has to be diagnosed by our technicians.
Print quality problems
First thing to try when encountering a print quality defect is to replace the toner cartridge (cartridges, when you have a color printer) or ink cartridges in your printer (this scenario does not apply to copiers). If you don’t have a new cartridge, try to use an old one, in case you saved any. Print again the same page you did with the other cartridge and compare the two printouts: do you see the same pattern in the image defect? If the answer is yes, the problem is with the printer. If the answer is no, replacing the cartridge with a new one should fix the image defect.
In some cases the professional cleaning of your printer may fix the print quality issue. In other cases, parts need to be replaced.
